A Season of Beauty: Moisturizers

A SEASON OF BEAUTY: part 4

A Season of Beauty is a 6-part series discussing the most important steps to healthy, glowing skin with products that you can incorporate into your regular skin care routine at home. This week we are discussing moisturizers.

#4  Moisturizers

Everyone needs a moisturizer, no question about it. Even those with the oiliest skin need a moisturizer. That might seem like an odd statement, but remember oil and water are not the same thing, in fact they chemically repel one another. And “moisturize” equals adding water, not oil. Just like all of your organs need water to function, skin needs water to stay healthy and balanced. But with as many moisturizers as there are biting bugs in summer, where do you start? Moisturizers tend to be occlusive, meaning they stay on the surface of the skin and don’t soak down to the lower layers of the skin like a serum would. They can also have different purposes too; some help to hold water in, and some help to keep toxins out.

How do you know which moisturizer to use?

As always it is best to have a professional assess your skin, and make moisturizer suggestions based on your skin’s needs. Also remember that the skin is always changing, and will react to its environment, both internally and externally. For example, the moisturizer you use during summer may not be the best for the winter. As the seasons change, so do our skin care needs. As we age and as our hormones change we need to make changes to our skin care regimen as well. Even the food we eat, and how much water we drink will affect the skin. In general terms, you want to use SPF during the day, but what about at night? It may be a good choice to have the same moisturizer for day and night, while adding an SPF over the moisturizer during the day. However, if you have oily skin that may be too much for daytime use. Again, this is why it’s so important to have a professional help you choose the best product for your personal skin type.

Some of my favorite, and my clients favorite moisturizers are:

NeoGenesis – Good for all skin types, and oncology-approved, NeoGenesis Moisturizer is a luxurious and deeply hydrating cream that contains patented S²RM® technology, antioxidants, and peptides (think cell-building, and cell-protecting) to support skin function and barrier repair.  This ultra-rich formula was created for those who require extra moisture for their skin. Skin is renewed, nourished, and protected through daily use. From Eminence Organic Skin Care product line: NEW from Eminence is the Lilikoi Mineral Defense Collection: The moisturizer has SPF 33 and the Face Primer, which usually goes over the moisturizer, adds protection from the blue light caused by electronic devices, like the screen you are staring at right now. The best thing about this collection is the targeted protection from environmental stressors, blue light, pollution and the sun. The collection also boasts a Sport Sunscreen for your whole body, a broad spectrum of 30 SPF. Eight Greens Whip Moisturizer – I love this for the hormonally-imbalanced skin type. Many of my 20-30 year-old clients love how this one soaks in, feels great on their face, and balances the skin to help stop hormonal break-outs. Firm Skin Acai Moisturizer – This one deeply moisturizes, and is antioxidant rich to aid in combating aging processes.  It smells and feels lovely! Rosehip Whip Moisturizer – This is a light moisturizer for normal to oily skin types, and gentle enough for sensitive skin.  Many of my acneic clients love this moisturizer. Stone Crop Whip Moisturizer – skin lightening, age-defying moisturizer for normal to dry, mature, pigmented and irritated skin. This is a favorite, for sure; I can barely keep it on my shelves! As a bonus, I am offering 20% of all in-stock moisturizers April 29 thru May 4, 2019 only. Call or email to get your favorite moisturizer before it’s gone.
