I have always promoted a physical sunblock over the chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens may keep your skin from burning, but at what cost to your health and the health of the environment. Chemicals can absorb into the skin causing reactions that may not be advantageous. Some chemicals when activated by UV light create free radicals that can cause damage to the cells, break down collagen and actually make aging faster.

What are the benefits of sunblock?

Sunblock such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide shield the sun’s rays. Find one that is non-nano so it doesn’t penetrate the skin. They also will not damage the coral reefs and cause environmental damage.

Many sunblocks now also aid in blocking the blue-rays from the technology we are exposed to everyday. With people inside more working on their devices this is an important step to take in your skin care routine.

Should I always stay out of the sun?

I also want to address the fact that even though the sun’s rays can be damaging, the sun is not our enemy. We need the sun to stay healthy. Be smart about your outdoor activities. Early in the morning and late afternoon are great times to get out, breathe fresh air and absorb the natural Vitamin D through your skin and Vitamin A through your eyes. A day at the beach or out in the garden in the middle of the day requires sun protection.
